I have always loved good horror stories and films. My favorites are mostly the classics: in fiction - Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, some of Stephen King; films include the original 1962 The Haunting, and Carnival of Souls from the same year and later The Shining. You get the idea. While I love the Light side - the beauty and miracle of nature, for example, I am also fascinated by the dark sides of the unconscious - the stuff of horror. I often debate whether to focus on it in my art - isn't there already enough darkness out there without my contribution? Yet, to me, this exploration is so alluring, so full of juice that I often can't resist (see, for example, my paintings Strange Days and Welcome to the Fun House). However, today in the Sunday SF Chronicle, amidst the usual Sunday fare, and light news, I find the latest from the Evangelical sector, the primary example of the dark unconscious running amok.
Tucked away on the bottom of page A14 in the main news section, is an article entitled "GOP contenders court evangelical Christians."
As though the Republican presidential contenders haven't already cow-towed enough to the pseudo - "religious" among us, they're now making sure that there's no misunderstanding where their allegiance stands. They're "calling for a larger role for religion in politics and warning that the country is becoming too secular." Too secular? Uh, duh...I thought the Constitution clearly states that the law of the land is based on the separation between church and state? All the candidates denounced the restricting of prayer in public schools (guess they forget the what the word "public" means?), the prohibition against pastors endorsing candidates from the pulpit, with Herman Cain even calling for changing the tax code to allow churches' involvement in politics! Then there's the nightmarish horror of the "personhood" law floated by the biggest fanatics among us. This horror would define "personhood" as beginning at conception - an instant criminilization of abortion under any circumstances and an open door for prosecution of anyone who even has a miscarriage!
Then there's Newt Gingrich's intelligent and thought-provoking statement on the Occupy Movement: "Go get a job right after you take a bath." This is a man who would be a world leader. This is the real horror story - that the ignorant, superstitious and just plain intellectually challenged should be somehow elevated to a position of legitimacy where one of them could actually take the reins of power and lead the dull and crazy into even deeper disaster than we have now.
If you're truly religious (meaning spiritual, conscious, compassionate, reasonable), start praying that this ain't so....and if you're not so inclined, do something, anything, to stop the zombie hords
